EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR FOR STUDENTS WITH
DISABILITIES For many years, the Broward
Country School District offered summer school that was open to all
exceptional students with disabilities. In 1999-2000 the Florida
Legislature changed the way summer school was funded. This action
modified the method in which the district provided summer school for all
students. In order to meet requirements of (the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act 9IDEA), the district developed guidelines to
help determine if students with disabilities need extended school year
services.
WHAT IS ESY?
Its services are...
 |
provided beyond the regular school
year calendar |
 |
related to specific goals in a
student's individual educational plan (IEP) |
 |
varied in type, intensity, location,
and inclusion of related services and length of time depending on
student's needs |
 |
determined by the IEP committee at
annual review or interim meeting |
 |
designed for ESE students who regress
and need more time to regain skills than their non-disabled
classmates |
HOW IS THE NEED FOR ESY DETERMINED?
Data and/or documentation show the likelihood...
-
of significant or substantial regression
-
that emerging critical life skills will be
significantly impacted
-
that behavior related to the disability will be
significantly impacted
-
that previously learned critical life skills/goals
will be significantly impacted... without extended school year
services.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUMMER SCHOOL AND ESY?
Summer School:
-
Eligibility is based on criteria set by the
district.
-
Students, including those with disabilities, attend
if they meet criteria established by the school system.
-
Summer school curriculum for all students is
provided based on the eligibility criteria and focus for
instruction.
-
Dates are determined by the district
EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR
-
Determination is based on whether skills would be
significantly jeopardized if ESY services are not provided.
-
IEP Committee determines need for each student
individually.
-
Services may be different than those services
provided throughout the year.
-
Initiation and duration is determined for each
student. If you have any questions regarding ESY, please call me at
384 5150.
