Come to the open house, pick up your Tequesta student schedule, and meet your teachers.   

The sixth grade open house is Friday, August 17, 2007 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.
The seventh grade open house is Thursday, August 16, 2007 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.

School begins at 9:00 a.m. Students can enter building at 8:45 a.m.  School ends at 3:30 p.m. everyone must be off campus by 4:00 p.m.

Be prepared for the 2007/2008 school year!

As part of the entry requirements for 7th and 8th grade and in accordance with
Florida Statute 232.032, your child will need to have the following immunizations on file: 

            Hepatitis B series (3 doses)

            Measles Vaccine 2nd dose (preferably MMR)

            Tetanus-Diphtheria Booster 

As your child receives his/her updated immunizations, please submit the original Florida 680 form to our Guidance Department.  Our summer hours are, Tuesday through Thursday between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.

From I-595 East:
 Take I-595 west to I-75 west (Naples).

 Pass the Park and turn right on Tequesta Trace- school will be on the right.

From I-595 East:
 Take I-595 west to I-75 south (Miami).
 Exit Royal Palm Blvd. west (Exit #8).
 Continue west on Royal Palm Blvd. to Weston Road (traffic light at intersection).
 From Weston Road continue west on Royal Palm Blvd. approx. 1.7 miles and turn right on Island Way.
 Stay in left lane and turn left at first road (Tequesta Trace).

From I-595 East:

Parent Advisory Forum

The Parent Advisory Council addresses school-wide issues. It serves as a liaison between school, various school organizations, and the community. It advises the principal in matters pertaining to the school, assesses the school's needs, evaluates programs designed to meet those needs, and participates in the development of the school's annual report.

PTA

Parents are encouraged to participate in PTA at Tequesta Trace Middle School. Parents involved in the education of their children increase their chance for success. PTA sponsors various programs and activities throughout the year which enhance the relationship between parents, teachers, and students.

School Advisory Council

By state law, every public school in Florida must have a School Advisory Council. The Tequesta Trace Middle School team includes representatives from the following groups: administrators, teachers, non-instructional personnel, community school, parents, students, and community businesses. The SAC meets monthly to formulate ways to foster improvement within the school.

Student Recognition Program

Tequesta Trace Middle School honors students who demonstrate improvement, excellence, accomplishment, and good citizenship. Parents are urged to join the faculty and staff in celebrating the special achievements of our students.

Principal's Honor Roll

Students with a grade point average of 3.8 or 4.0 are honored for their academic success each grading period. Students with a 4.0 are invited to a quarterly celebration hosted by the principal and support staff. Special certificates are awarded to all honorees.

Honor Roll

Students who earn a grade point average between 3.0 - 3.7 are awarded Honor Roll certificates by the assistant principals for their achievement .

Citizen of the Month

Teachers nominate students on a monthly basis who have demonstrated exemplary citizenship and school service. School certificates, letters of congratulation, and other remembrances are presented, and a group picture of each month's citizens is prominently displayed. A special principal's celebration is held quarterly to honor these outstanding students.

Student Activities

Tequesta Trace Middle School offers its students opportunities to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities. Parents and students are encouraged to consider the merits of becoming involved in this segment of school life. These activities can broaden student choices of positive leisure time activities, extend their cultural horizons, and develop in them a wide range of experiences appropriate for children of this age level. Brief descriptions of a variety of activities follow.

Student Government

The Student Government Association is an organized group of students whose main purpose is representing the opinions and desires of the students of a given school. In addition, the Student Government Association will encourage scholarship, citizenship, and social growth by sponsoring a variety of projects in both the school and community. Elections for officers will be October 1st. Meetings are twice a month and all students may attend. These meetings are announced ahead of time so students may attend.

Academic Competition

Students in all areas of the curriculum compete in county, state, and some national competitions. These include spelling bees, literary fair, Invent America competition, social studies fair, mathematics competitions, and fine arts competitions.

Sports

In order to encourage students to be well-rounded, Tequesta Trace Middle School offers several interscholastic sports teams for students in grades seven and eight. These teams participate in volleyball, basketball, soccer, track, and softball competitions with other schools. A cheerleading team is chosen from students in grades six, seven, and eight.

National Junior Honor Society

National Junior Honor Society is a national organization that promotes appropriate recognition for students who reflect accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship, and service. Seventh and eighth grade students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or above and exemplary behavior are recommended for membership by their teachers after the third quarter of the school year. Students must submit a personal resume that demonstrates completion of the five areas of recognition as mentioned above (scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship, and service.) Resumes are reviewed by the Faculty Council and students are notified of their acceptance into NJHS. Induction Ceremony is held in May of each school year. Active members of NJHS must maintain the standards by which they were selected. The chapter requires that the students maintain a 3.6 GPA and satisfactory or above marks in conduct. Each member is required to earn 50 service hours or more for the school year. Regular chapter meetings are held on the first and third Friday of each month. All members are required to attend the meetings, or bring a written excuse from parents, or guardians. Yearly dues are $10.00 and NJHS shirts may be purchased at a cost of $10.00. (Dues are mandatory, shirts are not.) The Tequesta Trace Chapter of National Junior Honor Society is a very active student organization. The chapter has earned numerous awards for their school and community related projects. Mrs. Jessica Cooper is the current Faculty Advisor for NJHS.

Peer Counseling

The peer counselors are available to help tutor fellow students, parents can call to request help. Peer Counselors are also available to counsel students on everyday issues and educate students to solve problems through conflict mediations. (Help forms are available in all classrooms)

Florida Future Educators of America (FFEA)

The Tequesta Trace Middle School Chapter of Florida Future Educators of America is a student organization that encourages students to consider career opportunities in education. Members are provided with knowledge and experiences which develop qualities and aptitudes basic to successful teaching.

MEMBERSHIP: Students in grades six-eight are invited to join. Active members are those who have and maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA and demonstrate satisfactory conduct. Regular meetings are held on the second and fourth Monday of each month. Members are required to attend all chapter meetings unless they have a written excuse from parents, guardians, or teachers. Dues are $5.00 for the school year. A membership pin will be given to students upon receipt of their dues. Shirts are not required, but may be purchased for $10.00.

Active members are required to earn 40 service hours for the school year. The chapter plans and coordinates school and community projects that will enable students to earn such service hours. The Tequesta Trace members of FFEA are invited to attend the Fall, Winter, and Spring Rallies hosted by the High School Chapters of FFEA. Transportation to the Rallies is the responsibility of each member.

The Tequesta Trace Chapter of FFEA has earned numerous awards at past County FFEA Competition Conferences. Mrs. Jessica Cooper is the current faculty advisor of FFEA.

Spanish Academic Games

Students compete in Spanish versions of games, like Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, Spelling Bees, and Vocabulario, against other Broward County middle schools.

G.R.E.A.T.

Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) is an eight week program designed to end gang violence across our nation. The curriculum is taught through social studies class by trained uniformed police officers and targets seventh and eighth grade students.

Human Diversity Council

A student organization that encourages participation to be involved in activities that promote cultural diversity, awareness, and appreciation. The overall theme of the organization is "Embracing, Celebrating, and Demonstrating Diversity".

Homework Hotline

Students may telephone the Homework Hotline provided by the district. They may call (954) 581-5377 Monday through Thursday from 5:00-8:00 p.m.

Lost and Found

Students who have lost or who find any articles are asked to come to the Administration Office. Students are encouraged to label clothing in order that lost items can be returned to the rightful owner. Positive identification will be required for all items not labeled.

Clinic

The school maintains a health clinic located in the Central Office, available for emergencies only. Students who are too ill to remain in class are too ill to stay in school. Parents will be notified to pick up their children. It is important that the Emergency and Health Cards reflect up-to-date information on health problems, addresses, phone numbers, and emergency contacts. No medication will be administered or dispensed to any student without the specific authorization by the Health Director of the Broward County Health Unit. Forms may be obtained at the front desk.

Dispensing Of Medication

If a student needs to take prescription or non-prescription medication during the school day, he/she must bring the medication and the authorization form to the clinic. The physician must complete each side of the medication form before medication is accepted and permission granted. Forms are available in the main office.

Supervision of Students

School hours for students are 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Parents are asked to kindly refrain from dropping students off before 8:30 a.m. or leaving students on campus after 3:45 p.m. unless they are attending a special supervised event. Campus supervision by the Tequesta Trace Middle School staff is not available beyond these hours.

Cafetorium

A well-balanced hot breakfast and lunch are provided. A cold salad bar is also available. Students may bring their own lunch from home and purchase milk and dessert, if desired. All students must eat in the cafetorium. When eligibility is established, students may participate in the free or reduced breakfast and lunch program. Parents are encouraged to instill in their children proper table manners and respect for others while dining in the cafetorium.

School Resource Officer

A partnership between the School Board of Broward County and the Broward Sheriff's Office affords us the benefit of a full time School Resource Officer. In order to maintain our campus as a safe and trouble-free environment, the officer counsels with and educates individuals and groups of students in cooperation with staff members.

Guidance Services

     The Guidance Department is located in the Student Services Office. Guidance personnel register and assist in academic placement of all students. The Guidance Department is responsible for interpreting group or individual test results to parents, students, faculty, or administration. The department supervises and coordinates all major testing during the year.
      The Guidance Department schedules conferences with students, parents, teachers, special school services, and community agencies. If you need to request a conference, call the Guidance Office (384-5171). Counselors are available to assist students throughout the school day.

Request for Homework

In case of extended absences (one week or more), assignments may be requested through Guidance. Please allow two days for these assignments to reach the office. It is the responsibility of the parent to make arrangements for the assignments to be taken home.

Homebound Program

If the illness of a student will be extends beyond a three-week period, parents must contact the Guidance Department regarding the Homebound Program.

Withdrawal and Transfer

Parents must notify the registrar of a student's withdrawal or transfer to another school. The student must bring a note to the Student Services Office authorizing his/her withdrawal or transfer at least two days prior to the last day of attendance. On the last day of attendance, he/she must report to the Student Services Office prior to the first bell to obtain the appropriate forms. These forms must be filled out by all of his/her teachers, books must be returned, and any fees or fines must be paid. Forms should be returned to the Student Services Office for final clearance during the last period of the school day.

Make-Up Work

Students who receive "excused" absences are expected to make up all work missed. For each day of absence, students have two days to make up work. However, any previously assigned work due during the absence is due the day of return. According to school board policy all assigned work missed during an "unexcused" absence will receive a grade of "0" and cannot be made up for credit.

Attendance

When students are absent, parents must call the Attendance Office (384-5169) or send a note to the child's first period teacher. Absence due to illness, death, religious holidays, or subpoena must be reported the day before, the day of, or the day following the absence. Calls and notes must specify the name of the student, date of absence, and reason for absence. If a student is marked absent by a teacher and a parent call has not been received, the Attendance Office will attempt to reach a parent at home or at work. Robot calls will be made to parents in the evening. Failure by a parent to contact the school by note or telephone results in an unexcused absence. Family trips or special events must be prearranged with the student's assistant principal at least five days prior to the trip. Request for Permitted Absence forms are available in the Attendance Office.

Parent Contact - Home Address and Telephone Number

On occasion during the school day, situations occur which require immediate telephone contact with parents. Also, important school information is relayed to parents by mail throughout the year. It is the responsibility of the parent to contact the Attendance Office immediately when a change in home address, work telephone number, or home telephone number occurs.

The public telephone is for emergency use only before and after school.

Tardy to School

If students arrive tardy to school but before 9:15 a.m., they should report to class. Students arriving after 9:15 a.m. must report to the Attendance Office.

Early Dismissal From School

Parents who wish to remove their children from school during the day should report to the Student Services Office. Because sixth period is a very busy time, we request that parents arrive at least 30 minutes before dismissal to sign students out. Only those persons listed by parents on the parent information forms will be allowed to remove students from school. Proper identification is required before any child is released. Parents are requested to send notes with students indicating the date and time their children will be taken off campus.

Bus Transportation

Students may use bus transportation if they live two or more miles from school. Students must abide by rules of common courtesy and vehicular safety at all times. The privilege to ride can be withdrawn for disruptive or unsatisfactory conduct. All students are under the authority of the driver while being transported and must obey his/her requests. Food and drinks may not be consumed on the bus. Students are to ride only the bus to which they are assigned. Students are not permitted to change buses without the prior clearance from the Transportation Office. Students who miss the bus in the afternoon must report at once to an assistant principal. Applications for empty seats for the 2006-2007 school year will be accepted after October. Students will need to re-apply for the privilege.

Bicycles

Bicycle racks are located at the north and south ends of the campus. All bicycles should be locked securely, and students may not loiter in those areas. Students on bicycles must not ride in the bus area or in the interior of the school. Bicycle riders should remain alert for pedestrians and adhere to safety rules including the wearing of helmets. A bicycle registration form should be on file in the School Resource Officer's office.

According to School Board Policy, roller blades, skate boards, and scooters are prohibited.

Evaluation of Student Progress

The middle school uses letter grades which are equal to the following:

90% - 100%   A = 4 points ..........outstanding superior progress

87% - 89%     B+ = 3.5 points.......above average progress

80% - 86%     B = 3 points ..........above average progress

77% - 79%     C+ = 2.5 points ..........average progress

70% - 76%     C = 2 points ..........average progress

67% - 69%     D+ = 1.5 points ..........lowest acceptable progress

60% - 66%     D = 1 point ...........lowest acceptable progress

Below 60%     F = 0 points..........failure

There are six early release days scheduled for the 2006-2007 school year. Dismissal is at 1:36 p.m. They are scheduled as follows:

Interim Reports

At approximately the midpoint of each nine-week grading period, an interim report is sent to all parents. Interim reports should be signed by parents and returned to school by the students. At this time students and parents are alerted to any academic problems. Interim reports are issued on the following dates:

Report Cards

Report cards are issued on the following dates:

First Quarter .............. November 6, 2006

Computer generated report cards are given to the students to take home. The final report card in June is mailed in July.

Character Education

     We know that families have the primary responsibility for teaching character, and we are not trying to replace the role of the family in a child's life. Our school system, like many others across the country, is responding to the community's renewed interest in developing positive character traits in our young people.
     After extensive public involvement, the School Board of Broward County, Florida has adopted eight character traits that will be infused throughout our curriculum and student activities: Responsibility (October), Citizenship (November), Kindness (December), Respect (January), Honesty (February), Self-control (March), Tolerance (April) and Cooperation (May).

Student Conduct and Discipline Code

Each student is given a Student Conduct and Discipline Code Book and a separate sheet which explains the weapons and drug policies. Both documents are discussed at school. Parents must read and sign both documents after reviewing them with their children at home. The rules and policies of Tequesta Trace Middle School follow the guidelines of the School Board’s Code of Student Conduct and Discipline.

Weapons

The possession or use of weapons, operable or inoperable, toys that resemble weapons, or ordinary objects used as weapons will lead to suspension and possible expulsion. All violations will be followed by the following actions: administrative action, immediate parent contact, suspension from the school campus (all classes and all school activities), and referral to the Special Investigative Unit and the police.

Drugs

The possession or use of drugs (including alcohol) or mood-altering substances leads to suspension and possible expulsion. All violations are followed by the following actions: administrative action, immediate parent contact, suspension from the school campus (all classes and all school activities), and referral to the Special Investigative Unit and the police.

Tobacco

Students are prohibited from possessing or using tobacco products anywhere on the campus or on the school bus.

Student Dress

Students must adhere to the following mandatory dress code:

TOPS Collared, short or long sleeved three button shirts in any solid color.  Shirts may not be form-fitting, lycra or spandex, and must be long enough to cover the midriff.
BOTTOMS Bottoms must adhere to one of the three color choices: black, navy blue, or tan made of cotton or cotton/polyester blend material.  Hemmed shorts and skirts must reach the end of the first row of knuckles beyond the hand when the arm is held down at the side.  All trousers must be secured at the waist. Denim jeans, sweat pants, nylon athletic pants, lycra, spandex, or oversized pants will NOT be permitted.
FOOTWEAR Shoes or athletic shoes must be worn at all times.  For safety reasons, flip-flop, zories, thong sandals, clogs, bedroom slippers, or any other type of open-toed shoes cannot be worn.
OUTERWEAR Jackets/sweaters may be worn but not in the place of an appropriate top.
HEAD COVERINGS Caps, hats, and bandannas may not be worn unless they are worn for religious or medical reasons.
ACCESSORIES Any articles of clothing or jewelry including, but not limited to, belts, bracelets, or collars with spikes, heavy link chains, and wallet chains may cause injury and are not allowed.

All students are required to adhere to the dress code requirements of Broward County School Board Policy #5309 at all times.  Failure to follow this code will result in disciplinary action.

A complete discipline plan will be supplied to students and parents at the beginning of the school year.

Other Important Rules

1. Students are not permitted to bring the following items on campus:
radios paging devices
telephones tape recorders / players
CD players toys or electronic games
laser pens

2. Fighting, profanity, stealing and insubordination are inappropriate and will not be tolerated in any manner.

3. Students are not permitted to leave campus, under any circumstances, without the permission of the parent/guardian and their grade level administrator. Students found off campus will be returned to school and the administration will contact their parents/guardians.

4. Students are to attend each class every day unless excused by their parents/guardians or a member of the school staff. Students "cutting class" will receive a consequence from their grade level administrator.

5. Students are expected to be in class on time. Teachers will inform administration and parents of students who are excessively tardy.

Visitors

Visitors to the school must be cleared through the main office. Student visitors are not allowed during the regular school day.

Change of Address

When there is a change of address, you must bring in proof of new address in order to update student’s records.

Breakfast and Lunch

School breakfast costs $1.10; lunch $2.20; and milk, $.30. Breakfast will be served from 8:15 am to 8:45 am. Students who eat breakfast will be expected to report to first period class on time. Prepayment for regular meals is to be made in the cafeteria before first period on Mondays or the first day of the school week. All students will receive a meal number. If your child has any food intolerance, please notify the cafeteria manager.
