Promoting A Challenging Education is the goal for sixth graders in the area of Reading and Language Arts. During the course of the year we will focus on reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. Also incorporated into the curriculum are activities in the areas of higher order thinking and creative problem solving.

Writing
There is nothing in writing which is more important that finding a voice. Voice is simply an individual style, or way of saying what is important. Voice is the manner of presentation which allows the personality of the writer to shine through the printed word and gives the reader a sense of conversation.

Every person has a unique, worthy voice. The trick is to find the voice and this comes through trusting yourself as a writer and not being afraid to write as you feel you need to write. Write often and allow a voice to emerge.

Reading
The ability to effectively read is important to the success of a student in any subject area. Engaging students in active reading practices can help them become more involved in their reading which will increase comprehension and retention. This year, we will focus on specific active reading strategies to improve students overall reading skills.

Grammar
The fact is it's an important skill for students to have. Not only that, standardized tests require that students have structural grammar knowledge. This year students will focus on such aspects of grammar as the parts of speech, verb tenses, types of sentences, punctuation, and capitalization.
