Welcome To Mrs. Barrios' Social Studies Class

Welcome to my 2008 - 2009 website. I am very excited to be teaching U.S. History classes. Gifted classes are involved in projects designed to enforce research skills, creativity and critical thinking. Regular U.S. History classes will engage in a variety of strategies designed to teach the story of our country and improve comprehension. All students will be challenged at appropriate levels.

U.S. History is a course in which students learn about the birth of our nation. The curriculum begins at the Age of Exploration, traces the founding of the 13 original colonies, the writing of the Constitution, and the Presidency of George Washington. The students will survey other Presidents and trace the growth of the nation from "sea to shining sea." We will then examine the origins of the Civil War, emphasizing slavery, the "peculiar institution." For the last part of the school year, students will study the 20th century. World War I and World War II are topics on the agenda. Students are expected to keep up with assignments and turn them in on the due date. There will be penalties for late assignments. Some assignments will not be accepted after the due date. The election of 2008 will be explored and followed from the first day of school until election day and then through the inauguration of our new president.
