Mrs.Barrios

Welcome To Mrs. Barrios' Social Studies Class

Welcome to my 2011 -2012 website. I am very excited to be teaching U.S. History classes. Gifted and advanced classes are involved in projects designed to enforce research skills, creativity and critical thinking. All students will be challenged at appropriate levels.

U.S. History is a course in which students learn about the birth of our nation. The curriculum begins at the Age of Exploration, traces the founding of the 13 original colonies, the writing of the Constitution, and the Presidency of George Washington. The students will survey other Presidents and trace the growth of the nation from "sea to shining sea." We will then examine the origins of the Civil War, emphasizing slavery, the "peculiar institution." For the last month of the school year, students will survey the 20th century. World War I, World War II and the cold war are topics on the agenda. We will also participate in the Junior Achievement Program. This program teaches students “real world” economics in a practical fashion. Study topics include financial institutions, using credit wisely, investments, taxes and how to create a budget. The program culminates with a field trip to Junior Achievement Finance Park. While there, students will rely on their economic skills and research abilities to create budgets based on their assigned scenarios and make the “real world” financial decisions to successfully live within their budget limitations.

Students are expected to keep up with assignments and turn them in on the due date. There will be penalties for late assignments. Some assignments will not be accepted after the due date.
