COMPOUND SUBJECTS
*** Reminder: A compound subject is made up of two or more simple subjects joined by a conjunction such as and, or, or nor.
Examples:
AND -- Monet and Picasso were both great painters. A compound subject whose subjects are joined by AND (Monet and Picasso) usually takes a plural verb (were).
OR or NOR -- When the parts of a compound subject are joined by OR or NOR, the verb should agree with the part closest to it.
Neither the Impressionists nor Picasso was represented in that gallery.
In this sentence, the subject PICASSO is closest to the verb. PICASSO is singular, so the verb must be singular as well.
Either Picasso or the Impressionists are good subjects for a research paper.
In this sentence, the subject THE IMPRESSIONISTS is closest to the verb. THE IMPRESSIONISTS is plural, so the verb must be plural as well.
1. Both Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso (was, were) great artists.
2. Picasso and Diego Velazquez (was, were) Spanish.
