STANDARDS for Reference and Research
The student:
1. checks the validity and accuracy of information in such ways as to differentiate fact and opinion, identifying strong and weak arguments, recognizing personal values infuence the conclusion a writer makes
2. locates, gathers, analyzes, evaluates written information for a variety of purposes
3. identifies devices of persuasion and methods of appeal and their effectiveness
4. selects and uses appropriate study and comprehension skills according to the types of material being read and interpreted
5. analyzes the validity and reliability of a source of information
6. writes to communicate ideas
7. writes notes, outlines, observations,comments that demonstrate comprehension of text
8. uses responsive listening skills, including paraphrasing, summarizing,and asking questions for elaboratin and clarification
9. uses effective strategies for informal discussions
10. identifies bias and propaganda in messages
11. understands how the tools of graphics, pictures, color can enhance text
