Ms. Jacobson

Welcome To Ms. Jacobson's Class Page

dot I have the pleasure of teaching both 7th and 8th grade Reading. My main objective is to help inspire and motivate our children to become more actively engaged readers.

Our text book, READ XL, provides the framework for achieving reading excellence and is designed to help accelerate achievement. Using a combination of research-based approaches, direct instruction, today's best practices, and engaging materials READ XL will help students to:
raise reading levels and test scores.
find success in ALL content areas;
and increase motivation and desire to read.

Homework is designed to be a meaningful extension of classwork. It is assigned weekly, and students will always be given ample time outside of class to work on any projects. Additionally, students should be reading at least 20 minutes nightly to be entered in their Reading Logs. My students who put forth effort to read for pleasure show the greatest improvement with their reading skills.

Fab Fours are due each and every Friday from our words of the day!!! This is an opportunity to creatively express your knowledge of our weekly words. Don't forget to include the following information: 1. definition (or synonym); 2. sentence; 3. picture; 4. antonym and the WORD. The proper format is displayed on the side board daily.

Reading Logs are due bi-weekly, please refer to your Reading Logs. Parent's signature is required. In order to encourage my students to become more responsible, organized and independent, LATE READING LOGS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!

Reading Across Broward April l, 2008 - March 31, 2009. Make sure you keep a record of the books you read for Reading Across Broward! Record the title and author of all books you read between April 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009. Award certificates will be presented to participating readers.

Parents please note, students are assigned daily vocabulary words, which are called "Word of the Day." Please keep in mind that students are quizzed regularly on these words. They should take a few minutes each night to review their new words. Words help readers unlock the mystery of reading. Daily, students use their textbooks to look up their words in relation to their in class reading assignments. Students are learning how to use CONTEXT CLUES -- the words, sentences and pictures surrounding an unknown word -- in order to make meaning and aid comprehension.
